In reply to <a href="https://www.dimsumanddoughnuts.com/charity-begins-at-home/#comment-20857">Aunt Susan/Grammy</a>.

I love this comment. I love that you do this for your grandchildren on the last night of Chanukah and I love that you commented so other people (like me) can see it. This part: "It is their responsibility to do their part to help those in their communities who need the help….a lesson I truly want them to learn and take to heart." YES. You're giving them the "tools" to do something good. That will stick with them. That's all I'm hoping to do over here too.
Thank you for being here. You sound like a very special Grammy and Aunt.

Because, like your kids, my grandkids are very fortunate, It is very important to me that they know that the whole world is not as priveliged as they are. There is a quote from Ethics of our Fathers (Pirke Avot) which I will get entirely wrong, but the gist of it is "While you are not required to finish the work of repairing the world, neither are you exempt from doing your share." The 8th night of Chanukah in our family is Tzedekah night. I give each of the grandkids $36 and they are to take that money to the grocery store to buy non-perishables to deliver to a food bank or to Target to buy toys for a Holiday Toy Drive. It is their responsibility to do their part to help those in their communities who need the help....a lesson I truly want them to learn and take to heart.
